A big thumbs up for Brad Sarno products! I've owned a couple of his preamps, a Black Box, a Freeloader, all good! I have a nice Tonic preamp with 2 tubes, mine has been modified to take a 12AX7 in both slots. One of the slots (or maybe one side of one tube) is used for the "black box" buffer function. Not sure which one. With it's variable Z tone control, the Black Box solved the problem. Brad's Freeloader will also work. It's a solid state tone control built into a small box that will clip onto the steel guitar leg.The Black Box has the Freeloader built in, but has the addition of the tube. The Black Box would be my 1st choice and the Freeloader,my 2nd choice. This current V8-G steel guitar preamp is sort of a cross between an Ampeg B15 and a '60s Fender with my own "SMS" component type and value tweaks to cater to steel guitar. That's the connection. As the cylinder turns the pins set onto the surface of the cylinder lift and release teeth on the comb which generates the sound and melodies played by the music box.
