fabric vs metal wing 120 My impression is the 120 and 140 handle better than the C150 and C152. and I think the 120 or early rag wing 140 has better roll response than the metal wing 140A. The difference the flaps make on the 140 compared to the 120 isn't much. Many outlets that have dimmers, USB ports, or other features tend to be a bit bulkier. You can swap out the box for a larger one but realize it can often lead to more issues such as having to notch out a stud or patch up drywall after the fact.

Fabric vs metal vs composite. I can name a few things about each of these construction techniques that appeal to me. There's something about the ease of framing with chromoly tubing and the pliability of fabric. There's something about the reliability and rigidity . I suspect some may have strong opinion on fabric vs metal wings on a 140 but anything specific pros/cons would be appreciated. Is it something I should avoid and why? I am also working on finding a mechanic to do the pre .
Notoriously underpowered, the fabric-wing economy model 120 (no flaps) and full-featured model 140 (flaps), and later the 140A (modern style metal wing) would usher thousands of pilots through initial training and into larger aircraft. But for the purist, these 2-seaters are lightweight joys to fly. With a little practice a lot of respect for .

The difference the flaps make on the 140 compared to the 120 isn't much. The fabric wing provides nice flying characteristics, with a light, crisp roll and an exceptionally docile and predictable stall. Full-stall, three-point landings are almost a nonevent in the. Would love a 120, 140, or older 150 (the square tailed ones). However, will not likely have a hangar (hard to get here in CT and quite expensive), so it will be tied down outside. Seems the metal wings would be the better way to go there, due to exposure to UV rays, snow, rain, etc. Thanks for whatever help anyone can give.
Maule used metal to "cover" the wing. It's not structural like a Cessna. Thus the two struts. I think a Maule wing with fabric would be super sweet. At least fabric is tight. Maule metal is loose. But it seems to work just fine. And is dirty tough most of the time. FYI. I want to make a ridiculous post and be a ridiculous person for posting it. Excluding the aforementioned 140A with its standard metal wing—and other 120s and 140s that have had their fabric wings converted to metal at some point in their lives—most 120s and 140s are .
At the same time, the 120 was made very simple, initially lacking flaps, rear side windows, and standard equipment such as the electrical systems. Cessna built side-by-side seating, fabric-covered wings, and yokes instead of sticks, and the company also introduced two wing struts on both the 120/140 series.
Super gorgeous teal fabric upholstery opens up possibilities for a lush room palette choice. Flared arms and wing backs attach to a non-removable seat and back cushion. Tapered black metal legs coordinate with the beautiful teal upholstery. Features: Includes: One (1) chair; Material: Pine, foam, fabric, metal, plywood, polyester fiber The Scapa hull was an all-metal structure, while the wing and tail surfaces had metal structure with fabric covering. Making water tight flying boat hulls is a lot different than making land planes but the Spitfire was a long long way from being Supermarine's introduction to metal construction. All metal wings (A & B) have 42 gallons fuel, 37 of which is usable. B models also added mass balanced elevators making them feel a bit "lighter" and changed the trim tab. . Better not try to slip a fabric sleeve for a 120/140 over .

I stopped by to look at a neighbors super cub today and was surprised to see it has metal wings. Its a '65 pa-18-150 that he has owned since the '70's. Since I have never even heard of it before, I asked if he had paperwork on the metal wings, and he showed me the the 337 for it. It says it was done in accordance with STC SA512sw, back in 1966. If you use Facebook, message Ken Morris (his picture shows him standing in front of his C-140A). Ken and his wife have restored several 140's and can possibly help you with your question and the information you seek.Their business Taildragger Aviation owns the STC for utilizing pop rivets for attaching fabric to C-140/C-120 wings, and they've visited the drag wire . Of course, shops who primarily specialize in high buck all metal aircraft really don't seem to solicit "fabric work", so they may be pricing a bit high(?). Finding a smaller "restoration" shop who works with fabric every day might bring a lower price. Of course, any needed repair or restoration to wing parts + R & R and rigging may add $$. Here is an example: C-140 w/ alternator conversion, C-90 conversion engine, metalized wings, 24 gallon fuel capacity, minimum VFR instruments, useful load 422 lbs. 24 gal x 6 = 150 lbs 422 - 150 - 175 (me) = 97 lbs. Wife weighs 130. I've been told metal wings adds 24 lbs, so a rag wing would let me carry a 121 lbs passenger.
If you want to know how a 120/140 is built, look at a C-150/152. Structurally, with the exception of the welded steel struts of the 120/140s, and the fabric covered wings, they are almost identical. The spring steel landing gear of the 120/140 was the first large-scale application of Steve Wittman's patent and it obviously worked. A two-seat cabin monoplane with a strut-braced high-set wing, it was the progenitor of derived models that ramained in production until the late 1980s. Structure was all-metal, except for fabric-covered wings, the landing gear was of fixed tailwheel type introducing cantilever spring steel main units, and the enclosed cabin provided two seats . I redrilled for clips on the top of the wing and figured if the original holes lasted 52 years this set of holes will last as long as I will fly. There is a guy on the 140 site that has an stc to replace the clips with rivets on 140-120' but I am not sure if it covers 170s but it is probably a better set up if the FAA would approve. Other than engine overhaul, the major cost for a 120 is re-covering the wings, if they’re still fabric. Depending on the fabric and whether the airplane is hangared, re-cover intervals range between seven and 20 years. Metal wings are, of course, heavier than the fabric versions by about 30 to 40 pounds. 1- metal wing or fabric covering?
