That's just habit. You could use UF-B cable which is basically outdoor NM. (just watch your conduit fill, that stuff takes a lot of fill!) Or if you want to do THHN in the conduit and change to NM in junction boxes accessible from inside the attic, that is fine too. THHN is very favorable for conduit fill, so 1/2" pipe might suffice. They make PVC pipe and hardware specifically for conduit, or you could use EMT and not need to pull a ground. NM in conduit doesn't make sense, the sheath is useless and may force a wire derate, is illegal in wet areas, and is hard to pull. Run THHN stranded (individual wires). With four 90 bends it is going to be a miserable conduit pull.
